Duckweed (Easy)
This may sound crazy, but Duckweed is far more than just a floating plant. Its also a nuisance.
Well, and more importantly, it’s one of the absolute BEST cures for an algae problem you can possibly add to your tank… ANY tank. In fact, it will help reduce or fully remove ANY kind of algae present in your tank, no matter how much lighting, nutrients, CO2, plants, etc you have. Why?
Algae is, at it’s core level, needs two things to grow, just like a plant. It needs food (Nitrite), and light for photosynthesis. If you limit one or both of those factors, your algae problem will disappear.
Duckweed multiplies like crazy. Because of this:
Since it grows so fast, it sucks up TONS of nitrite. Algae can’t grow without nitrite, and algae is almost always caused by an excess of nitrite. Remove the extra nitrite, remove the algae.
And as a result of the fast growth, Duckweed is fantastic for helping block out light, which is the other primary cause for algae.
